The musical, which blends gig and ballet, is based on the tale of the infamous monarch
Cake: The Marie Antoinette Playlist will return to London for a full season this autumn.
The show, which previously toured across the UK and played for a limited series of concerts at the Lyric Theatre in London, will now have a full season at The Other Palace, beginning in September.
Billed as a “brand-new musical, come gig, come ballet”, the piece imagines a tale of scandal and retribution for the ill-fated French monarch after she meets commoner Jeanne.
The creative team for the show includes writers Morgan Lloyd Malcolm (Emilia), Tasha Taylor Johnson (The Cat In The Hat) and Jack McManus. Set and costume design is by Sami Fendall, lighting design by Joshie Harriette and casting by Will Burton.
Bronagh Lagan (Cruise) and Christopher Tendai (Closer To Heaven) join as director and choreographer respectively, building on the work done by Drew McOnie (In the Heights, Jesus Christ Superstar) for the show’s original spell.
Initial casting has also been revealed. Zizi Strallen (Mary Poppins, Strictly Ballroom) plays Marie Antoinette, with Renée Lamb (Be More Chill, Six) also returning as Jeanne. Further cast are to be revealed.
Paul Taylor-Mills (artistic director of The Other Palace) said today: “I’m delighted we are bringing Cake to the Other Palace for a full run, as this brand-new genre busting musical continues to evolve following on from it’s try-out last year.
“Completing our 2024 programme of new musicals and developing work, from Cruel Intentions the Musical at the start of the year to Babies currently receiving rave reviews, and Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World over the summer, and the London premiere of The Lightning Thief, this will literally be the icing on the cake!”
The show runs from 13 September to 10 November, with tickets on sale now.
