True Brit Entertainment has dropped the official trailer for The Critic, starring Ian McKellen.

The new film, based on Anthony Quinn’s novel Curtain Call and adapted by Patrick Marber (Closer), is directed by Anand Tucker and produced by Jolyon Symonds for Fearless Minds and Bill Kenwright’s BK Studios.

It revolves around Jimmy Erskine (played by McKellen), the most feared and famous theatre critic in 1930s London and a gay man forever at the mercy of laws that prohibit his very existence. Expressing his flamboyance through his writing (and his cattiness), his job security is threatened, when a new family values-focused boss takes over his newspaper.

Alongside McKellen, the cast also features a variety of stage favourites, including Gemma Arterton, Mark Strong, Ben Barnes, Alfred Enoch, Romola Garai and Lesley Manville.

The Critic debuts in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 13 September.
